Blu Privacy Policy

Draft for the owner to review. Not legal advice. Last updated 2026-11-07.

This policy explains what Blu, the Discord music bot, stores about you, who else sees it, how long it is kept, and how to get it or delete it. It describes what the code actually does.

Who runs Blu

Blu is run by one person (its owner) for groups of friends, and works only in servers the owner has turned on. Contact: the Blu Support server, https://discord.gg/em8MQuP4cg.

What Blu stores

In its database (Postgres, on the owner's server, on a private network):

  • Play history: the songs you started (and songs autoplay picked after them), in which server, when, and whether they were skipped.
  • Liked songs.
  • Playlists you own, with their songs, and your Discord username as a tag so public playlists with the same name can be told apart.
  • Reminders: their text (200 characters at most), the server and channel, until they are delivered or cancelled.
  • The wake learning list, if you joined it (see "Audio").
  • Permissions a server gave you: sending DMs through Blu (and how many a minute), changing how long Blu listens.
  • Server settings, which belong to the server, not to you: DJ role, channels, volume, and so on.
  • Queues and voice sessions, so music carries on after a restart. A queue lists who asked for each song.
  • Caches of songs and lyrics, which hold no personal data.

Audio

Audio is never stored. The one exception is short voice clips of people on the wake learning list, used to teach Blu to hear "Hey Blu". You join it yourself with /wake learning on, or the owner adds people who agreed; nobody is added by default. The clips wait on the server (1 GB at most), are copied to the owner's computer for training, and are then deleted from the server. /wake learning off deletes the clips that are still waiting; clips already used to train a model can't be taken out of that model.

Voice control and AI chat

"Hey Blu" voice control and AI chat (@Blu, /ask) are off by default in every server; someone with Manage Server turns them on with /voice. When they are on:

  • after "Hey Blu", the audio of your request goes to Google Gemini, and to Groq, which turns speech into text (a small local model checks for "Hey Blu" first);
  • messages you send to Blu with @Blu or /ask go to Google Gemini;
  • the text of what Blu heard or read and what it answered is written to a voice log on the server, which rotates at 10 MB (one older file is kept).

/aiplaylist sends the prompt you type to Google Gemini whenever the bot has an AI key, even in servers where voice control is off. Feature ideas you ask for by voice go to the owner's idea list with your name.

Discord only sends Blu the text of messages that mention it, and of DMs. Text chat remembers the last few exchanges in a channel for 5 minutes, in memory only.

Other services Blu uses

  • Discord, where everything happens.
  • Google Gemini and Groq, as above.
  • YouTube / YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Bandcamp, to search for songs and stream them; Spotify, only to read the details of Spotify links.
  • LRCLIB (lyrics), SponsorBlock (skipping non-music parts of songs) and Radio Browser (radio stations).

These services get the song names, links or text needed for each request, not your Discord account.

How long data is kept

  • Play history, likes and playlists: until you delete them (there is no automatic expiry yet).
  • Reminders: until they are delivered or cancelled, then cleaned up.
  • The voice log: until it rotates (10 MB, one older file kept).
  • Application logs: 14 days. Database backups: 14 days.
  • The shared cache (Redis) is never saved to disk and holds no history: song links, lyrics, short-lived switches and rate-limit counters (with your user id; they expire on their own, within a day).

Your choices

  • /mydata export: a file with what Blu stores about you, in every server: your plays (the latest 10,000), likes, playlists you own, open reminders, wake learning and permissions, your lines in the voice log and the voice ideas you gave the owner. If the file would pass 8 MB, the oldest plays are left out first, then the oldest voice-log lines.
  • /mydata delete: deletes your play history, likes, playlists you own, reminders, wake-word clips, the permissions servers gave you, and your "Hey Blu" and chat request text (voice log and owner idea list), in every server and on every process Blu runs. Database backups made before the delete still hold your data for up to 14 days, then they are deleted. Server playlists and server settings are the server's and stay; songs you queued that are still in a queue stay until they play.
  • Each of the two works once per 10 minutes.
  • If /mydata isn't available where you are, ask in the support server.
  • /wake learning off, and asking a server admin to turn voice control off (/voice).

Children

Discord requires its users to be at least 13 (older where local law says so). Blu is only for people who may use Discord.

Changes and contact
